As you may remember, a couple weeks ago I announced that I will be going to Guatemala from February 20-28, 2016 as part of a Habitat for Humanity Global Village trip. Our Global Village team will be in the Zacapa department of Guatemala, where we will spend the week building a Habitat home for a partner family of the Guatemala Habitat for Humanity affiliate.
A core tenet of the Habitat program is “sweat equity”, which means that Habitat families get to have a hand in building their (or other Habitat families’) home. So we will get to work alongside and get to know the family we are serving.
When we aren’t working, we’ll get a chance to explore the country and immerse ourselves in Guatemalan culture.
This will be my 2nd Global Village trip – in February 2014, I went on a Global Village trip to El Salvador. It was the experience of a lifetime and that’s why I’m so thrilled to go on another one.
But I need your help to get there!
Since I am a volunteer and the trip is coordinated through non-profit Habitat for Humanity International, I can fund-raise the costs of my trip. As someone who lives on a non-profit salary, it is only through the humbling generosity of my friends and family that I can be part of this team and have these amazing experiences. The donations go to our team and cover a donation the Guatemalan Habitat for Humanity affiliate and our housing, in-country transportation, and meals (donations don’t pay for my airfare, passport fees, souvenirs, or alcohol). The donations are also, by the way, 100% tax deductible!
But most importantly, these donations to our team allow our friends, family members and colleagues to give the gift of home to a deserving family. We may be the boots on the ground mixing concrete, stacking bricks and sweating it out in the Guatemalan sun but it is the generosity of our supporters that make the dream of homeownership for these families a reality.
So, I hope that you’ll consider helping me and my teammates get to Guatemala in February! No matter how much you give, it really makes a difference to me and my teammates. The link above takes you to my fundraising page where you can make a donation and learn more about our team, our trip, and Habitat for Humanity. If you don’t want to donate online, ask me how to donate by check.
Guatemala, here I come!!
